Ditch the Tacky T-Shirt: the Best Souvenirs from DMV Creatives

When you go on vacation, do you bring back souvenirs? You know, the usual suspects: tacky t-shirts, overly enthusiastic stickers, or snowglobes that look like they belong in a 90s sitcom? Well, what if I told you the best souvenirs are actually made locally? If you’re planning a trip to Washington, DC, get ready to snag some gems from the DMV creatives!

Now, hold up—what’s the DMV? No, it’s not that dreaded Department of Motor Vehicles where dreams go to die. It’s an abbreviation for the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia!

Love shopping? Grab your credit card and prepare for some retail therapy. DC and its surrounding suburbs are practically bursting with small businesses. You’ll find everything from artisanal soap to handmade dog sweaters that your pup absolutely does not need—but you’ll buy it anyway because it’s cute!

And can we take a moment to talk about the cuisine? I won’t admit how much weight I’ve gained since moving here, but let’s just say my scale now has commitment issues. It all started with the tables of small independent restaurants, where the food is so good I practically need a bib. Cooking? Not my thing. But finding good food? My Yelp skills are sharp! DC’s dining scene makes taste buds dance! With so many restaurants focusing on local ingredients, it’s impossible not to find a meal that will delight you!

And let’s not forget the art markets and shows! Meeting talented artists and discovering unique pieces is my favorite way to spend a Saturday afternoon—because who doesn’t want a one-of-a-kind painting of a cat wearing sunglasses to hang above their couch? dive into the local scene, and come home with much cooler souvenirs than that snow globe!

DMV made chocolates

For chocolate that hits both the sweet tooth and the soul, check out these local DMV chocolatiers. Chouquette brings a playful twist with its Taylor Swift chocolate puzzle—a unique treat that lets you indulge piece by piece. Meanwhile, Potomac Chocolate’s 70% dark chocolate with shredded coconut bar is perfect for those who crave a bold, rich flavor with a tropical touch. Both options offer a memorable taste of the region’s artisanal sweets!

Book Lovers

Did you even travel if you didn’t visit a locally-owned bookstore? My favorites in the District are Lost City Books; Loyalty Bookstores; and Solid State Books. In Virginia, I shop at Bards Alley in Vienna, VA; Hooray for Books in Alexandria, VA; or A Thousand Stories in Herndon, VA. In Maryland, check out Queen Takes Book in Columbia, MD; Dreamers & Make Believers in Baltimore, MD; and Busboys & Poets in Hyattsville, MD.

Bejewel Yourself

The DMV is home to a thriving jewelry scene that brings creative sparkle to life. Start with Mallory Shelter’s selection, featuring bold pieces like the groovy initial charm by Adina Reyter—a standout statement. Rachel Pfeffer’s whimsical, clever designs, like her quirky cat whisker hair slide, offer pieces with a playful twist. Cindy Liebel’s stud earrings, crafted in sterling silver and orange citrine, are everyday studs that add a pop of color.

Choosing locally made self-care essentials is a meaningful way to relax and unwind while uplifting the area’s creative community.

Purchasing these products supports local entrepreneurs and helps strengthen the community. Many makers are passionate about their craft and committed to giving back to the city. Supporting DMV’s local artisans lets you bring a bit of tranquility home with you.

And if you’re flying out of DCA, hit up The Neighborgoods DCA store! In Terminal 2 of the National Hall, past security, grab some last minute DC souvenirs from a local DC based gift shop.

Leave a comment sharing about your favorite souvenirs from a trip – DC or otherwise.
